Try "Southerners" for a Dinner Out

Returning guests are probably familiar with the Causeway Gourmet restaurant located on the mainland causeway at Ocean Plaza. If you've enjoyed the food there in the past, you should make plans to try the proprietors' new restaurant named 'Southerners' located in Calabash.

The restaurant is a short 10 to 15 minute drive from the island, and is located on Beach Drive in Calabash. It's in the building that for years was Haley's Restaurant.

Dawn & Jonathon have wanted to operate a full restaurant for years, and with the opening of Southerners, they have expanded their (already great) entree selection from Causeway Gourmet. The restaurant opened earlier this year.

There's plenty of choice on the menu for everyone. We've enjoyed a shrimp & grits dish and a pecan chicken entree; there's beef, soup, salads, and desserts as well. One tip-salad lovers will enjoy this place-the salads are full-size and very good.

There's a full bar at Southerners in case a crowd beats you to a table. We thought the entrees were reasonably priced for the area. And the staff was very attentive.

So if you're looking for a new place to eat on your next visit to the beach, we recommend you give Southerners a try.

here's some feedback from one of our OIB homeowners that ate at Southerners:

Dawn, my wife and I dined with you on Saturday evening. We were met at the front door by exiting guests who told us how great the food was. The hostess smiled as she greeted us and directed us to the bar for a short wait. Lisa the bar tender was cheerful and friendly. She set the stage for a delightful evening. Deborah was our waitress and was knowledgeable, cheerful, and helpful. As we dined I noticed that the entire staff was focused, clean, and professional. Two staff members who were tasked with tables near us were Christine, who shared her smile even though we were not her table, and Ashley, who seemed to be the ultimate professional. You visited our table to check on us and I'm sure wondered why I needed your e-mail address. You have done a grand job with your training. We recently ate in Charleston at RB's on Shem Creek. Your shimp and grits beat theirs hands down, no contest. My wife was delighted with your pork chop entree, which was very tender. This e-mail may sound a little "gushing", but in todays "restaurant world" my wife and I don't have a reason to offer these compliments very often. I can only offer one tiny suggestion that you could dim the lighting slightly, as fine dining with white table cloths creates the "mood". Finally we noticed you were reasonably priced so we will return. Sincerely, R.&P.M. Ocean Isle Beach and Mint Hill N.C.
